NovitaTech accessible telecommunications workshop
NovitaTech invites you to an interactive workshop that focuses on providing effective access for someone with a physi
cal disability or elderly people with limited functionality to use a home or mobile phone.
The 'NovitaTech accessible telecommunications workshop' is a one-day workshop to promote how Australians with physical disabilities and limitations can gain access to a home or mobile telephone using existing technology.
The workshop will run from 10:00 am til 4:30 pm and will cost only $25 to cover the cost of morning and afternoon tea, coffee and lunch on the day.
Our ability to deliver these workshops at such a low cost is due to the generous sponsorship of the Australian Communication Exchange (ACE) a not-for-profit, Australian organisation dedicated to empowering those who have a hearing, speech or communication impairment, to obtain access to the telephone and other telecommunication networks, Telstra’s Disabilities Services and the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts.
These hands-on workshops will showcase NovitaTech's on-going research in the area of telecommunications, and will feature presentations and hands-on demonstrations of the solutions currently available to assist people with disabilities and elderly people gain access to telecommunications equipment and services. Workshop attendees will have ample opportunity to ask questions, trial the equipment, and see for themselves how the technology works.
The workshops are targeted to:
- people with a physical disability and elderly people with limited functionality who want to know how they can effectively use a home or mobile phone
- family, friends, carers, or health care professionals who have an interest in this area and are involved in supporting someone with a disability
- Government and non-government disability organisations.
The workshops will demonstrate known off-the-shelf solutions that enable someone with a physical disability and elderly people with limited functionality to be able to independently use a home or mobile phone. The types of examples that will be shown include: portable hands-free and voice recognition technologies, switch adapted phone accessories, 3G and internet phones, phones that have accessible features that make access to the phone easier, and high level solutions that involve someone being able to use their electronic communication device with a mobile phone to independently send a text message or initiate and answer a call.
Information will also be given on certain types of home phone solutions, as well as latest developments on a draft code and a guideline being developed by a specific committee working in conjunction with telephone manufacturers to ensure people with a disability can use their products in the future.
There will also a session that will give an overview on the services and support that the Australian Communication Exchange provide to those who have a hearing, speech or communication impairment, to obtain access to the telephone and other telecommunication networks.
