Bloorview-VMI Virtual Music Instrument

Bloorview VMI senior juniorStevie Wonder once said 'Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand'. At NovitaTech we firmly believe this is true, and that everyone, no matter their abilities, should have the opportunity to create music and share in this world. However I hear you say ‘I can’t play an instrument’ so how can you be a part?

We’d like to introduce you to Bloorview VMI – a virtual music instrument that enables you to play music, or create sound effects, through movement without needing to hold or manipulate an instrument. By moving a finger, waving an arm, nodding your head or walking around a room you can create the strum of a guitar, tweet of a bird, or banging of a drum.

This ingenious system uses specialised software – Bloorview VMI – in combination with a webcam and computer to provide accessible music for all. With the ability to play music from instruments and common sounds the Bloorview VMI offers a stimulating activity that can be motivating, challenging and accessible to children and adults of all needs. The program is highly customisable, and easy to use and incorporate into therapy, recreational and educational activities.

At NovitaTech everyone is excited about the release of this innovative program that was first developed in 2003 by Dr Tom Chau from Boorview Kids Rehab, Canada, and has been gradually refined over several years. NovitaTech, the technology division of Novita Children’s Services, has been involved with this project since its inception, completing several research projects focusing on the benefits of using such a system. This research has demonstrated that the Bloorview VMI can have amazing positive effects, such as:

  • stimulating cognition
  • encouraging movement and physical activity
  • improving receptive language
  • improving listening skills
  • developing spatial awareness and motor planning
  • encouraging self-expression and awareness
  • encouraging group work
  • developing turn-taking concepts
  • developing dexterity and range of motion
  • improving social interaction
  • encouraging inclusion
  • enhancing creativity and imagination.

One of the greatest benefits of the program is that across all abilities and age groups, the Bloorview VMI provides an unparalleled sense of achievement.
